Freedom Day Parades

Brazilian Butch, 1984/92.
Dancers with the rhythm group Sistah Boom.

I've been photographing the San Francisco Freedom Day Parades in black and white since 197l as a means of documenting our culture. For the most part I've focused on lesbians. In the early 1990s I began hand coloring some images with oil paints. In 1996 I began photographing the San Francisco Dyke March in black and white. I also have images from the 1993 March on Washington.

US Out of Big Mountain, 1989/92.

This image refers to the on-going struggle of the Dineh (Navaho) people of Arizona to defend their land rights at Big Mountain. Since1974 the U.S. government and Peabody Coal Company have been using the Hopi Tribal Council to try to get control of this area which has large low-sulfur coal deposits.

Native American Contingent, 1989/92.
